Theme of 17th NRB meeting

Northern water systems are notorious for being poorly quantified. Observational networks are generally sparse, requiring many assumptions when estimating water budgets and water chemistry.  This leads to uncertainty for scientists, policy makers, water managers and northern residents.  The amount and impact of uncertainty has recently been compounded by climate change and increased human activity in some locations, respectively.  Several recent international programs, including the International Polar Year (IPY) and the Prediction in Ungauged Basins Initiative (PUB), will need to address the matter of uncertainty in order to be successful. The proposed theme of the 17th International Northern Research Basins Symposium and Workshop is Managing hydrological uncertainty in high latitude environments.

Presentations that discuss uncertainty in hydrological process understanding, hydrology-ocean interactions, water budget estimation, hydrological modeling, measurement, and water management are encouraged. Finally, this meeting will examine achievements in quantifying and managing uncertainty, evaluate the current work from recent research programs including IPY and PUB and set new milestones.
